Running on a campaign of 35 years of solid public service, two-term Mayor Raul G. Salinas’ message of inter-governmental cooperation and strong background of law-enforcement experience resonated with a community frustrated with the image of Laredo that was being portrayed by national and regional media.
A retired FBI agent – having served the Bureau for 27 years – and most recently, serving as an assistant legal attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City, Salinas knows well and understands the unique problems that Mexico faces, which also indirectly affect the entire U.S./Mexico border; specifically, the border town of Laredo.
While with the FBI, Salinas was key in developing and maintaining liaison contacts with Mexican law enforcement counterparts and being assigned to many foreign counterintelligence cases.
Prior to arriving in Laredo in 1988 to spearhead the FBI bureau, Salinas started his career in Washington, D.C., serving as a United States Capitol police officer, where he specialized in providing protection for the president and vice president, congressional leaders and visiting foreign dignitaries. While working his way through college at the University of Maryland, - he holds a bachelor of arts degree in law enforcement studies and criminology – Salinas also was an aide for the Honorable Eligio (Kika) De La Garza (D-Texas), former U.S. Representative.
As mayor of Laredo, Salinas wants the world to know the real streets of Laredo: prosperous, beautiful and safe for its residents and visitors. A strong relationship between Laredo and its Sister City across the river, Nuevo Laredo, Mexico has existed for well over 200 years; he intends to focus on helping the United States understand the importance of our neighbor and friend to the south, all while maintaining the safety and security of the U.S./Mexico border. In fact, because of his focus and commitment to promoting border issues, the U.S. Conference of Mayors has appointed Salinas as Co-Chair for the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Task Force, as well as Vice-Chair for Surface Ports of the Transportation and Communications Committee.
Mayor Salinas is the proud father and soon to be grandfather. He is also a HUGE Dallas Cowboys fan.
